On Sunday, May 31, 2009 the cruiser community of Vancouver lost a great friend and enthusiast; he will be sadly missed by all that knew him.
Darcy was a founding member of The 362's and a regular rider of the Thursday night rides in Surrey; a memorial ride was therefore declared for the Thursday, June 4, 2009 after his passing.
It was to be a small gathering of friends that had ridden with Darcy throughout his downhill and cruiser riding years; it was an impromptu but natural decision that was made just days prior to the ride and as such only a handful of people were expected to come out and ride the trails of Green Timbers that Darcy loved so much.
As Thursday approached and we finally made our way to the Bike Zone I was in shock to see almost sixty riders ready to ride and celebrate Darcy's life. A night that would have made Darcy proud....not over how many Kokanee's were drank but of all the people that took time out of their schedule to honor a great friend.
Rest in Peace Darcy and may you always have a tail wind at your back.....

How bikes make cities cool

"Fresh from the Kona Productions Crew, How Bikes Make Cities Cool – Portland, is a five-minute mini documentary that explores the thriving bicycle culture resident to one of North America’s most progressive metropolises. Filmed entirely by bike, with support from longtime Kona Portland dealer Sellwood Cycles and resident Team Kona athletes Erik Tonkin and Matthew Slaven, we spent the better part of a week talking to commuters, following kids to school and capturing the friendly vibe and funky nature of a city that embraces self-propelled commuting at the heart of its identity."

Colony Farm Cruising

It's Winter, and for most folks riding is season has long passed. But if you don't mind being bundled up, there is some great cycling to be had. Colony Farm is a regional Park with a large system of paths perfect for some winter cruising.

In the Spring and Summer Colony Farm is an excellent Birder's destination. There are many Species of birds who choose to overwinter in the Marshy lowlands. More Photos after the jump.

Toyohashi Cruisin

Toyohashi Japan has got some great looking spots to see. The bike riding there looks amazing. It seems there are more forgotten places to immerse yourself in than one would expect. This post features photos from our friend's blog.

Sanomagic

Mark just beamed over this article about these amazing bikes built of mahogony. The builder is a ninth generation shipwright from Japan. No word on if the builder plans to produce a Downhill bike in the future.

I know what you're thinking: Wooden bicycles that don't suck? YUP.

Shoreline trail

We went cruisin in Port Moody today. We parked at Rocky point and took the shoreline bike trail around the Burrard inlet to Ioco and back. It's a really nice alternative to the standard sea wall rip.

Skinny Tire Ryder

If you only ever pick mud out of your teeth and the thought of showing off your molson muscle in lycra makes you cringe then you might want to skip this, but this weekend was a big one for Canadian cycling on an international stage. Ryder Hesjedal of Victoria and former professional XC racer just became the first Canadian cyclist to win a stage at a European Grand Tour event in over 20 years! The 12th stage of the Vuelta a EspaƱa, essentially the Spanish version of the Tour de France, saw Ryder make a last ditch attack in the final kilometer after riding with the breakaway all day to take the win.

So, get out your Double-Doubles, put on a Toque, and raise a stubby Labbat to a bright moment for Canadian cycling!
