Hey all,

It has been swell... This blog has been at it for 10 years. During that time, it has recorded a small snapshot of bicycle and volunteer related content from the lower mainland. --However, the time has come to discontinue service... Thanks to anyone who stopped by.

Let's end this blog with another final chapter... A few photos of the extinct 604 pumptrack... all taken from the same spot, (up in a tree)...

We received word from the City of Surrey that the 604 is about to be "renaturalized" by the developer of the townhouses next door. It was fun while it lasted folks, but it looks like the end of that unofficial riding spot.... Enjoy this video of it turning one year old from way back in February of 2012

I dropped by the 604 pump track last night to snap a photo. The track is running smooth and looks gorgeous with the springtime transformation taking place. That is all.

As it mentions on the DIRT site, we have been working hard lately toward the completion of the bike park in Invergarry Park. We expect to hold an official opening day with SORCE in June. Stay tuned....

The 604 Pump Track is still rideable this time of year. In case you were wondering.

SORCE/Dirtwest Partnership

Some really great news has occured over the past couple months. Dirtwest is now partnered up with SORCE. I (Jordan) am now an executive member of Sorce. In my new role I will be focusing on the development of new riding facilities in Surrey.

So what does this mean to you ? First of all SORCE is officially changing their mandate to represent all of Surrey, and will be now working towards the continued maintenance of ALL surrey bike parks including Port Kells, Cloverdale Athletic Park, Invergarry Bike Park, South Surrey Bike Park, and working towards the development of additional facilities in the future (hopefully near future).

Some of the things we have on the go are: the completion of Invergarry bike park (which is slated to be complete by summer), trying to get SORCE represented on the Outdoor Sports Advisory Committee which will give us even stronger representation and lines of communication with the city, the return of the Junkyard Dog XC race, trying to get the 604 pump track legitimized or at least get some kind of official permission from the city for it to exist, and trying to get a plan of action to make the Surrey Bicycle Recreation Facilities Strategy a reality and in a timely fashion, and most importantly to unify the mountain biking community in Surrey to give us a stronger voice.

So what we need from you surrey's riding population is your voice! If you guys could check out the SORCE website and facebook page and click on the like button that would be awesome. If you want to take it a step further and join SORCE that would be 10 times as awesome. The reality of it is the more people we have on board the louder our voice gets, the louder our voice the more we are heard and listened to. More people more cool stuff!!!

604 Pumptrack Update

 

With the favorable weather this October the track had been riding really great, drainage was perfect and the traction magnificent. The only thing that wasn't quite working was the crown feature on the straight-away.

We decided it would be best to shrink the whole thing and turn it into a triple in order to increase the speed and flow of the course. Thanks to the help from Nic Rodgers from the Dunbar cycles DH race team, his dad Jon and a couple friends, We were able to get this feature 90% complete! With a bit more tuning we should have this feature dialed within the next week or two, so stay tuned!

I also learned that there will be a pump track springing up in the South Delta area in the near future. If you live in the area and you would like to help, let us know by clicking the volunteer button and we will try to get you in contact with the builders!

We rode the pump track yesterday. It was warm and sunny and we had a great time:

We were at the pump track on Easter Sunday. We did some routine maintenance and made changes to some features. Here's a rainy video of the triple becoming a crown:

We dropped by the 604 track today. Spring is finally coming around. The track is packing nicely and becoming really fast. I snapped some photos and shot some video(edit coming soon)

Mark and Kai went to the pump track today and sorted out the crown, it is now a triple.

The weather has been Sunny with cold nights lately. So we stopped by the track yesterday to see if we could get some laps in. We found a muck laden frosty mess.

We also went on a walkthrough yesterday of local bike parks in Surrey(Port Kells, cloverdale and the proposed Invergarry bike park). We will be posting the videos soon. Despite our track being rideable, the City built parks didn't fair so well, giant puddles and unrideable features are what we encountered at Port Kells park.

Planting native species

We try very hard to respect the neighborhood and environment surrounding the 604. Yesterday we planted a number of native species around the pump track for privacy and ecology's sake. We want to ensure there are minimal impacts as a result of our presence.

We seeded pacific coast wildflowers on any disturbed area which won't be ridden on(back sides of berms, the center of the track, etc...).

We also ran into the biologist who is charge of sediment and erosion control for the housing construction near our track. We asked him about the impact on the local water tables and environment as a result of our track's location and our building techniques.

We were happy to hear that our track does not represent any appreciable harm to the local area and it is not a concern for erosion or sediment due to its construction techniques ( the track drains towards the middle, surrounded by Canary grass which works as an excellent filter, as well as our planting of native species, among the other reasons he cited). Needless to say, we were very happy to hear all of this from a biologist. Especially one hired by the local developer.
