Imba visit 2013

Dale, John, X, and Jordan from SORCE bike club

Hey we never posted on this really cool thing tht happened in 2013: Big thanks to Imba Canada and AJ and Rachael

This past weekend, we had the pleasure to visit Surrey, BC, where the Surrey Off-Road Cycling Enthusiasts (SORCE), call home. Before arriving, we wondered what this large, but relatively flat city situated south-east of Vancouver would have to offer. Most input we received from others (upon mentioning our next visit) was that Surrey had lots of farmland, but had little to offer in the way of riding.
Boy, were they wrong. What Surrey has is a group of hard working club members and progressive city officials that understands the benefits of cycling and urban bike parks. Get these two things together and you have the recipe for bike park awesomeness!
Surrey, population 468,000, has four progressive bike parks around the city with many options for dirt jumps, pump tracks, and urban singletrack. We had the pleasure of visiting two of the four parks during our time in the city, Invergarry and South Surrey, which were both filled with riders young and old.
Our afternoon field session took place on South Surrey's trail network, working with a group of SORCE volunteers to rejuvenate existing singletrack into a new, progressive flow trail. It was incredible to see such a great urban cycling facility alongside other city infrastructure like tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and soccer pitches.
A huge thanks to SORCE for planning such a great visit, to Norco for supplying swag and prizes to volunteers, and also to Beast & Brine (@beastandbrine) for providing great lunches to feed our hungry workers!

SSBP tree planting

SORCE president Jordan enjoying the heavy rain
Peter, Vince and Wilma toughing out the rain

SORCE bike club was in the South Surrey Bike Park planting native trees and shrubs. The weather was about as rainy as it gets here on the coast of BC. But that didn't stop SORCE from getting out there with shovels. The focus was on repairing the many areas of the forest that have sustained damage through trail braiding. We planted a lot of salal, ferns, wild rose, vine maple, salmon berries and simon berries in the areas most affected by the trail braids.

South Surrey bike park trail map

I did some sleuthing around and found a stack of potentially helpful South Surrey Bike Park map and trail info. Some of it is sure to be out of date, but I thought having this info accessible all in one a place would be a good thing. Enjoy with no sleuthing required.

SORCE trail day

SORCE bike club recently held a trail day on a section of the Junk Yard Dog loop in the South Surrey Bike Park. The new trail section will mimic the flowy, bermy Chainless Larry trail also in SSBP. Leading the construction of the new trail is Vince (Builder of Chainless Larry) and Jordan (SORCE president)

A big thanks goes out to all the volunteers who showed up!

SORCE/Dirtwest Partnership

Some really great news has occured over the past couple months. Dirtwest is now partnered up with SORCE. I (Jordan) am now an executive member of Sorce. In my new role I will be focusing on the development of new riding facilities in Surrey.

So what does this mean to you ? First of all SORCE is officially changing their mandate to represent all of Surrey, and will be now working towards the continued maintenance of ALL surrey bike parks including Port Kells, Cloverdale Athletic Park, Invergarry Bike Park, South Surrey Bike Park, and working towards the development of additional facilities in the future (hopefully near future).

Some of the things we have on the go are: the completion of Invergarry bike park (which is slated to be complete by summer), trying to get SORCE represented on the Outdoor Sports Advisory Committee which will give us even stronger representation and lines of communication with the city, the return of the Junkyard Dog XC race, trying to get the 604 pump track legitimized or at least get some kind of official permission from the city for it to exist, and trying to get a plan of action to make the Surrey Bicycle Recreation Facilities Strategy a reality and in a timely fashion, and most importantly to unify the mountain biking community in Surrey to give us a stronger voice.

So what we need from you surrey's riding population is your voice! If you guys could check out the SORCE website and facebook page and click on the like button that would be awesome. If you want to take it a step further and join SORCE that would be 10 times as awesome. The reality of it is the more people we have on board the louder our voice gets, the louder our voice the more we are heard and listened to. More people more cool stuff!!!
