If you only ever pick mud out of your teeth and the thought of showing off your molson muscle in lycra makes you cringe then you might want to skip this, but this weekend was a big one for Canadian cycling on an international stage. Ryder Hesjedal of Victoria and former professional XC racer just became the first Canadian cyclist to win a stage at a European Grand Tour event in over 20 years! The 12th stage of the Vuelta a EspaƱa, essentially the Spanish version of the Tour de France, saw Ryder make a last ditch attack in the final kilometer after riding with the breakaway all day to take the win.
So, get out your Double-Doubles, put on a Toque, and raise a stubby Labbat to a bright moment for Canadian cycling!
